Abstract

Certainly, all human activities, including the construction of cities, should provide a suitable environment for his life. The physical structure of cities and every part of them should remind people of spiritual and cultural principles and values. Principles and values should be planned in such a way that all human needs and abilities are taken into consideration. From the Islamic themes point of view, the key context for the flourishing of material and extra-material powers and needs is establishing the fourfold communication of human beings. This research aims to analyze the situation of facade construction in contemporary Iranian architecture, identify the jurisprudential and moral principles governing the facade of residential buildings and explain them according to the principles of Islamic Sharia. The fundamentals and the main roots of this issue and the topics related to it can be found in the Qur'an and hadiths. In this process, the documentary method was used to collect data, and qualitative content analysis and logical reasoning methods were used to analyze the data obtained from religious texts. After extracting the principles related to jurisprudence and ethics, the way they can be represented in the facade of residential buildings was explained. Lastly, to pathologize the existing situation and express the conflicts in the facade of residential buildings compared to the teachings of the Quran and Hadiths, the principles obtained based on the fourfold connections of human beings were examined. The results of this research reveal that contemporary residential facades are disruptive in all four types of relationships, and therefore, the most reproducibility regarding the weakened relationship is related to the relationship between humans and others. In a pathological look at facade architecture, it is determined that the result of the various damages mentioned and the negative impact on urban facades threatens all aspects of human life.

Abstract

Understanding, comprehension and sensory reception of the human being, from the architectural implications, undergo changes by getting far and closer to the architectural works. It is necessary to pay attention to this issue in pilgrimage architecture due to the importance of feeling responses at different distances. This research answers these questions: 1- What effect does the change of scale have on the decline of pilgrimage architectural meanings such as "Grandeur" and "intimacy"? 2- What changes do people's feeling responses undergo at different stages of approaching a pilgrimage site? The purpose of this research is to investigate the two implications of Grandeur and Intimacy in pilgrimage buildings and how it is perceived by the visitor at different distances of the building, including the stages of seeing, crossing the threshold and touching the building in the center. In this research, a mixed approach was chosen and qualitative content analysis was used, followed by exploratory factor analysis in SPSS software and confirmatory factor analysis in AMOS software. For this purpose, the individual's "distance" variable was considered as an independent variable, and "intimacy" and " Grandeur" were considered as dependent variables. 19 items in the questionnaire were compiled using the intervention method and by manipulating the scale and size of the images and provided to 229 subjects. For ease of answering, one building was evaluated in each question. Further, exploratory factor analysis led to the discovery of 4 components, which were proved by confirmatory factor analysis. The findings of the research show that there is a significant relationship between visibility and Grandeur on the one hand and centrality and intimacy on the other hand. The standard factor loadings of the items of each factor are more than 0.4. Considering the significance of the items in their factor for all the variables of the research, it is concluded that by changing the scale in a desirable range from " Dominant scale" to "intimate scale", the person's preference is transformed from grandeur to intimacy. No matter how much in the stage of vision and desirability of grandeur, we witness a direct relationship with the same slope, the pleasantness of the proportional relationship and intimacy does not have such a constant rhythm and harmony, and too closeness to the sacred matter has an avoidance feature for the pilgrim.

Abstract

The concept of "inner space" (Daroon) as a fundamental quality in architecture of worship place plays a decisive role in shaping the experience of presence. However, today, this quality is often weakened due to the dominance of formal and functional aspects, necessitating a systematic and analytical redefinition. This research aimed to formulate an analytical framework for the concept of "inner space," examine its manifestation in the rock shrine Ghadamgah in Azarshahr, and conduct an analytical comparison with contemporary architecture of similar typologies. Employing a qualitative-interpretive method and a case study strategy at the mentioned site, the study sought to answer two primary questions: first, what are the orders, levels, and characteristics of the concept of inner space in architecture from the perspective of theorists; and second, how is the inner space defined in the architecture of the rock shrine Ghadamgah of Azarshahr. Data were collected through systematic field observations, physical documentation, and library studies, and were analyzed using an interpretive synthesis approach, with validity ensured through a triangulation strategy.
The findings reveal that "inner space" is a relational and generative phenomenon formed through the interaction between the human and the space in a three-level hierarchical process: (1) At the structural level, strategies such as enclosure, emphasis on mass, and symbolic lighting create a meaningful physical context. (2) This context enables patterns at the functional level, including movement guidance and focus on a center. (3) The user's interaction with these two layers leads to rich experiences at the semantic level, such as a sense of immersion and spiritual connection. The main achievement of the research is presenting a three-level analytical model of inner space. Applying this model as a critique criterion shows that the weakening of inner space quality in many contemporary of worship place typologies is primarily the result of an unbalanced attention and the excessive dominance of the structural level (visual grandeur and scale) at the cost of neglecting the actional and perceptual levels (privacy, stillness, and sense of belonging). From a practical perspective, this framework provides a design guide that emphasizes the necessity of creating a systemic balance between form, function, and experience.

Abstract

One of the most important dimensions of the human–place relationship is the sense of place attachment, which develops when an individual interacts with an environment and forms meaning and emotional bonds toward it. This study addresses two questions: Which physical and non-physical components influence place attachment in apartment and detached houses? How does the level of attachment compare between these two housing types and by which indicators can they be contrasted? Which components play a more prominent role in each housing pattern?
Following a literature review, nine key indicators were identified and, through field investigation in the Shahid Mahallati Residential Town (District 1, Tehran), were regarded as the most pertinent challenges in the study area. The physical indicators comprised: form and dimensions of elements, spatial configuration and access, materials and finishes, and spatial privacy; the non-physical indicators comprised: meanings and symbols, activity and comfort, social interactions, individual characteristics, and memories and experiences.
The research adopts a survey design. Data were collected via 276 researcher-designed questionnaires; the sample size was determined using Cochran’s formula. Statistical analyses were performed in SPSS using independent-samples t tests, Pearson correlation, and multivariate regression.
Findings indicate that in detached houses, physical indicators-particularly form and dimensions of elements and spatial privacy-exert the greatest influence on place attachment, as geometric proportions and hierarchical entry and visual separation between interior spaces ensure flexibility and tranquility. In contrast, in apartment buildings, spatial configuration and access together with quality of materials and finishes play a more prominent role; the simplicity and legibility of internal spatial relationships and the use of modern, high-quality materials reinforce attachment. Regarding non-physical indicators, activity and comfort and memories and experiences are most influential in detached houses, whereas social interactions emerge as the primary factor in apartment living. The indicators meanings and symbols and individual characteristics showed similar effects across both housing types. Overall, results suggest that place attachment in detached houses is more strongly rooted in spatial proportions, hierarchical organization, and mnemonic ties, while in apartments it is more contingent on construction quality and social interaction among residents.
