Experimental measurement of thermodynamic properties for simple or complex fluid systems and theoretical or empirical modeling of available experimental data is one of the most active fields of chemical engineering research. Accurate process design relies heavily on the availability and correct application of thermodynamic models, which are in turn developed by fitting molecular theories to vast ranges of experimental data. As such, the thermodynamics research laboratory pursues a dual goal; first is the study and development of theoretical models for thermophysical properties’ prediction. This activity features the application of advanced molecular theories, equations of state, and computer experiments (i.e. molecular simulations). Our other main objective is, of course, experimental measurement of thermodynamic data. We are mainly focused on fields relevant to the oil and gas industries, but our activities also include fields of general process engineering application and also novel research areas relevant to molecular and experimental thermodynamics.
Some examples of our recent activities include experimental and theoretical studies on natural gas adsorption, gas hydrate formation conditions, asphaltene precipitation and general vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid phase equilibria. The thermodynamics research lab has been established in 2006 and is supervised by Dr F Feyz, assisted by Dr MR Dehghani and Dr B Behzadi. The lab includes a total of 8 pc’s, including a high-speed processor for simulation applications, a multi-purpose medium-pressure experimental setup with temperature control used for different applications, atmospheric VLE and LLE setups, a vacuum oven, vacuum pumps and other relevant facilities. Since establishment, 23 graduate students –including 4 Ph.D candidates - have used the lab for research relevant to their theses. Four research projects have also been completed in the lab. Results of the research activities are routinely published in prominent scientific journals, and are also presented in technical and scientific
