Abstract

Ethical teachings are an important part of the teachings of the religion of Islam and Ethical concepts are among the abstract concepts which are defined differently by different people and then Everyone, in their own way, manifest those in architecture and we’ll get different votes.
The ongoing research addresses the issue of how a value accepted in Islam (contentment) can be assessed in architecture in order to evaluate its status, predict its future, and to achieve its planning.
In response to this question, indexing is proposed that has a long history in social science. This method involves the following steps: first nominal definition of concept (by semantics) be done and definitions to be elected and then architectural dimensions should be determined. In the next step Islamic criteria based on Islamic concept should be recognized. Then Indicators are determined and finally the items sets and concepts, dimensions, criteria, indicators and items are weighted by Delphi Technique and Analytic Hierarchy process (AHP).
Proof of the efficiency of this method has been done by performing a process of indexing on contentment and so we got a questionnaire with 216 items. By answering it is possible to understand the extent to which the concept of contentment is manifested in the desired architecture and what should be considered in order to achieve a contentmenal architecture. Of course, given the method's deductibility, it is evident that access to the objective is relative and there is no claim to the comprehensiveness of the method.
The method used in this research is a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Data collection in the qualitative part is based on the library method (collecting available documentary data) and field (interview, questionnaire) and in the small part, it is a field survey (questionnaire). In the analysis of data in the qualitative section, the method of semantics and rational reasoning and in the quantitative part of the Delphi method and hierarchical analysis have been used.
Results of indexing of contentment showed that among the dimensions of architecture, effective individuals are important and among the effective individual, architecture have the greatest importance. Adaptation of the architecture to the shape of the lives of users; Understanding the effective individual from the cultural, social and economic environment; Respect for nature in the process of architecture; Understanding the architect from the physical, geographical and climatic environment; Avoiding economic disaster in architecture are the most important items in realizing a contentmental architecture.

Abstract

The concept of contentment derived from the content is one of the names of Allah that in Islamic foundations has been emphasized. The traditional man, relying on these bases, to illustrate the divine names, he has tried in different aspects of his life. Architecture is one of the areas which these names appear in it and from a variety of architectures; the house provides the most possible for these traits to a Muslim. Accordingly, the present study sought to analyze the manifestation of the concept of contentment in the architecture of Iranian traditional houses. The results of this analysis can be used as doctrines for application in contemporary architecture. The research process is carried out as follows which after the terminology of this concept in literature and extracting synonyms and opposites with it these meanings are discussed in various Islamic texts including Quran verses, hadiths, infallible traditions (AS) and their interpretations. On the other hand, in the specialized literature of architecture, this issue is being examined and the issues that have been mentioned in this topic are extracted. Then, by analyzing and categorizing the findings, the principles related to contentment, which are feasible in architecture, are extracted. Due to the lack of specialized resources in relation to the various methods of presentation of the principles obtained, from the point of view of experts and architects also used for this purpose. Finally, after extracting the parameters related to each principle the depiction of the obtained items in the Mortaz House collection is analyzed as a case study. The results of the research showed that the concept of contentment in the architecture of Iranian traditional homes is based on four principles of Avoidance of futility, self-affirmation, moderation, and Rule of no injury.

Abstract

Traditional Iranian architecture was a reflection of the beliefs, worldview, and culture of its time, intended to represent its principles and values. The concept of frugality has always been regarded as a significant value in traditional architecture. Traditional architecture not only emphasized frugality in design and nature but also prioritized the integration of green spaces with buildings. However, in contemporary architecture, the connection between green spaces and built structures is often neglected. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to explore the various dimensions of the manifestation of the concept of frugality in the architecture of Iranian gardens and to provide a basis for its application in contemporary architectural patterns. The research questions are: 1. What are the components of frugality from the perspective of Islamic thought? 2. How has it been manifested in the architecture of Iranian gardens (which are the product of past behavioral culture)? 3. What strategies and solutions can be offered for contemporary architecture (in relation to nature)? These questions are addressed using a descriptive-analytical method. The data collection is based on library research, and the statistical population includes four residential gardens in Iran: Narenjestan-e Ghavam Garden in Shiraz, Delgosha Garden in Shiraz, Golshan Garden in Tabas, and Dowlatabad Garden in Yazd. The research findings indicate that frugality can be analyzed in three layers. The innermost layer is the core of Islamic teachings, which refers to the two concepts of frugality and avoidance of wastefulness and extravagance in Quranic verses and narrations. The next outer layer is the culture of frugality in the Islamic lifestyle, divided into two groups: moral values and geographical and climatic conditions. The outermost third layer consists of Pirnia’s principles, which include self-sufficiency and avoidance of futility, both rooted in the concept of frugality and avoidance of wastefulness and extravagance. Overall, it can be stated that the manifestation and reflection of all these components are observable in the four Iranian gardens. Architects, considering the concept of frugality, have attempted to design and construct environments integrated with green spaces. However, the study concludes that the component of Islamic teachings has had a significant influence on the manifestation of frugality in Iranian gardens, as it forms the core and inner layer. The components of the culture of frugality in lifestyle and Pirnia’s principles are also influenced by Islamic teachings. Moreover, based on the conducted analyses, strategies and solutions have been proposed for contemporary architecture. These components can be applied in contemporary architecture in areas such as planting systems, water management, buildings, and the materials used.
