Abstract

This paper presents a finite element analysis and its related experimental test of corrugated steel web beams subjected to fatigue loading. A particular focus in this study was set on the fatigue failure arising from the web-to-flange welded joint of the corrugated steel web beam. A detailed three-dimensional finite element model which explicitly includes the geometry of the web-to-flange welds along the corrugated web was developed to simulate the test corrugated web beam. The finite element model is verified by comparing with related fatigue experimental test results. The effective notch stress approach was also applied to analyse the web-to-flange welded joint replicating the local critical region in the corrugated web beam. The fatigue strength of the web-to-flange welded joint was evaluated and compared numerically by considering the stress distribution at potential fatigue crack initiation location. The fatigue life of the corrugated web beam was assessed numerically by incorporating material S-N relation and employing fracture mechanics approach. The comparison with the fatigue test results show that it is possible to expect the fatigue crack failure arising at the weld root or weld toe corresponding to the sections with reference angle using the effective notch stress analysis. The range of these predictions was evaluated by comparing with fatigue test results with accuracy and can be considered between AASHTO fatigue categories B and B’. The parametric notch stress analysis incorporating the influences of corrugation angle was performed and demonstrates it is possible to expect the fatigue crack failure arising at the weld root or weld toe. Finally, a practical solution for possible fatigue life enhancement of such structure is proposed by decreasing the corrugation angle or smoothing the intersection geometry of the corrugated web is suggested together with a moderate increase of the flange thickness.

Abstract

The current building codes provide limited prescriptive guidance on design for protection of buildings due to progressive collapse. Progressive collapse is a situation in which a localized failure in a structure, caused by an abnormal load, such as explosions or other happenings. Three procedures, often employed for determination of the structural response during progressive collapse i.e. linear static procedure (LSP), nonlinear static (NSP) and nonlinear dynamic (NDP) analyses. In nonlinear static analysis, a force-based method is applied and the structure is pushed down to the target force. In this research, a new displacement-based method will be proposed for nonlinear static analysis. In displacement-based method, the structure is pushed down to target displacement instead of target force (similar to the one in seismic pushover analysis). To make a nonlinear static analysis, instead of increasing the load around the area of the removed column, a maximum displacement is calculated and the upper node of the removed column is pushed up to target displacement. Here, to determine the target displacement, results from nonlinear dynamic and linear static analyses are compared. This paper tries to present a formula to calculate the target displacement using the linear static rather than the nonlinear dynamic analysis. For this reason, 3 buildings with 3, 5 and 10 stories have been seismically designed and studied. The results show that, this method is much more accurate in comparison to the recommended approach in current codes. Also, this method does not have the limitations of force-based nonlinear static analysis.

Abstract

In this paper using the eigenvalues and eigenvectors symmetric block diagonal matrices with infinite dimension and numerical method of finite difference a closed form solution for exact solving of Laplace equation is presented. Moreover, the method of this paper has applications in different states of boundary conditions like Newman, Dirichlet and other mixed boundary conditions. Moreover, with the method of this paper, a mathematical model for the exact solution of the Poisson equation is derived. Since these equations have many applications in engineering problems, in each part examples like water seepage problem through the soil and torsion of prismatic bars are presented. Finally the method is provided for torsion problem of prismatic bars with non-circular and non-rectangular cross sections by using of conformal mapping.

Abstract

Steel plate shear walls have long been used as a lateral load resisting system. It is composed of beam and column frame elements, to which infill plates are connected. This paper investigates the progressive collapse-resisting capacity of 50-story building 3D model of the strip model of steel plate shear wall comparing with X-braced and moment frame system based on the removing structural elements from a middle and corner of the exterior frame, in the story above the ground. The collapse behavior is evaluated by different nonlinear static and dynamic analyses using conventional analysis software. In this study, vulnerability of structures is also assessed by sensitivity index (SI) regarding the sensitivity of structures to dynamic effect induced by progressive collapse. To identify vulnerable members, resulting actions of nonlinear static analysis, considering load factor to account for dynamic effect, at the failure mode of structure at the specific performance level are compared by the factor of redundancy related to overall strength of structure, with the linear static analysis of damaged model without considering dynamic effect,. Comparing analysis results indicated that in the steel plate shear wall system, the progressive collapse resisting potential is more than X-braced and moment frame. Sensitive index of highly sensitive elements to dynamic effect stated that in the structural models, beams are more vulnerable in moment frame than X-braced frame and SPSW structure, significantly, and vulnerability of columns in X-braced frame and SPSW system is more than moment frame.

Abstract

Abstract The Drawer Bracing System (DBS) is a ductile bracing system that is developed to enhance the seismic performance of braced frames. The system is composed of three parallel plates that are attached together via transfer plates at right angle. Seismic energy is dissipated through the formation of flexural plastic hinges at the two ends of the transfer plates. The parallel plates must have adequate strength and stiffness to prevent global buckling and to remain elastic while transferring forces to transfer plates. Height, width, thickness and the number of the transfer plates may be varied to achieve the desired strength and stiffness of the system. In contrast to common bracing systems, the main advantage of a DBS is the conversion of the axial forces to flexural moments in the dissipating elements. In the present paper, the nonlinear shear response of the DBS is predicted via closed-form formulas for calculation of strength, stiffness and post-yield behavior of the system. These formulations are based on both experimental observations and theoretical analysis. The calculated force-displacement backbone curve is verified to be a very good approximation for predicting the nonlinear shear response of the system.

Abstract

Steel bridges play a very important role in every country’s transportation system. To ensure that bridges perform reliably, engineers monitor their performance which is referred to as Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). An important element of SHM includes the prediction of service life. There is ample historical evidence that bridge damage is pervasive and their life time is decreasing. To manage costs and safety, service life prediction of bridges is necessary. We present a statistical method to predict service life for steel bridges. A nonparametric statistical model based on the bootstrap method for stress analysis for fatigue life prediction of steel girder bridges is proposed. The bootstrap provides a simple approach for reproduction of the probability distribution of measured strain data. The bootstrap is sensitive to the number of events in the verification sample (data), thus we introduce a stable survival distribution function (SDF). An index is presented in this paper for inferring the service life of steel bridges, which can be known as the Life Index (µ). The life index function shows variation of the age of steel bridges under daily traffic loads. A regression model is developed which relates the service life of steel bridges using a bridge life index based on measured operational strain time histories. The predicted remaining service life derived from the model can contribute to effective management of steel bridges. The proposed method assists bridge engineers, bridge owners, and state officials in objective assessment of deteriorated bridges for retrofit or replacement of deteriorated bridges. Timely repair and retrofit increase the safety levels in bridges and decrease costs.

Abstract

Engineering design usually requires considering multiple variances in a design and integrating them appropriately in order to achieve the most desirable alternative. This consideration takes particular importance in the constructional projects of civil engineering. However, frequently, the structural designer’s considerations in civil engineering teams contrast the stylish and creative novelties of architectures. Then, we should take up new methodologies to yield appropriate alternatives which meet artistic aspects of design and simultaneously satisfy the structural designer’s demands. Consequently, the process of design should incorporate the multi-fold aspects of engineer’s requirements and their personal preference. So, in this study, we preset a systematic approach, so-called desirability based design, to perform a directed multi-objective optimal design considering various aspects of a design, based on soft-computing methods. Fuzzy logic integrated with genetic algorithm is employed to build a decision-making fuzzy system based on expert knowledge. It will be employed to conduct the designing process. Illustrative examples show practicality and efficiency of the presented methodology in structural design of several space structures.

Abstract

Tuned mass dampers are common solutions for passive control of bridge responses against dynamic loads. The present work concerns non-uniform support excitation of earthquakes as the dynamic loading source and studies TMD performance in controlling consequent vertical response of simply supported steel bridges. Charged system search as a recent meta-heuristic is successfully utilized to optimize TMD parameters whereas the dynamic response is evaluated via rigorous step-by-step time-history finite element analysis. As another issue, superiority of multiple TMD’s over single TMD is investigated for the present problem after unifying their parameters via optimization. Treating a bridge model as the case study under a number of real-world recorded earthquakes, the error of uniform support excitation under such a non-uniform case is evaluated. Superior efficiency of the utilized charged system search over popular genetic algorithm is observed for this problem. The results also revealed that how advantageous is the application of optimally designed multiple TMD in controlling dynamic vibration modes of such a distributed mass structure

Abstract

From practical point of view, optimum design of structures under time variable loadings faces many challenges. Issues such as time-dependent behavior of constraints and the computational costs of the gradients could be mentioned. In order to prevent such difficulties, in this paper, response spectrum method has been utilized instead of applying direct time history method. Additionally, seismic design of structures is defined as a design for a specific response spectra not for an individual acceleration time history. Furthermore, here, in order to guarantee the global optimal designs, the obtained results from gradient-based method are compared with those from the discrete optimization technique (Genetic algorithm). As well, the P-Delta effects are considered in a seismic analysis. In addition, many practical constraints according to the Iranian national building code (NBC) are included in the optimization problem. The developed MATLAB based computer program is utilized to solve the numerical examples of low, intermediate and relatively high-rise braced and un-braced steel frames.

Abstract

In this paper, the assessment of four short-span steel bridges from 24 to 42 m under local overloaded trucks and ground motion records are presented and discussed. Bridges were virtually located in Mexico, and so the vehicular live loads, earthquake loads due to local seismicity, and other local loads were adapted in the design. A realistic condition of the local design truck for Mexico was selected from survey traffic flows reported for local highways. Nonlinear dynamic analyses were carried out using seven historical records associated with the largest vertical intensities from subduction earthquakes in Mexico. Results are intended to evaluate the local practice, which frequently adopts the current AASHTO LRFD Specifications in the absence of an official local design code for bridge structures. Thus, this research pretends to provide design recommendations for short-span steel bridges in Mexico.

Abstract

The paper is presented an attempt to assess service life of steel girders in military bridges (or by-pass temporary bridges) when fatigue cracks are detected in them. A function describing the geometry of fatigue cracks, the so-called crack shape factor Y, for two different, assumed calculated models, was presented. The function was used to plot sample graphs allowing assessing the remaining service life of such structural elements or engineering structures in a simple way. This method of analyzing can be used not only for the military bridges but also for other steel structures with existing cracks. The work is also presented assessments of possible applications of two FEM calculated models using shell elements to test stress and deformation at the top part of a fatigue crack located in a web of a steel girder used in the military bridges. The results of the conducted numerical analyses were compared with the results obtained in experimental research conducted in laboratory conditions using extensometers.

Abstract

This study presents methods for numerical modelling and the static computer analysis of steel decks fixed on scaffoldings. The main problem raised here is the method of creating models of a single deck and determination of the accuracy of every model for various design situations: the analysis of state stress in components of decks, the strength analysis of scaffolding where decks can be loaded by untypical the arrangement of materials and the strength analysis of full scaffoldings. The analysis of a state stress in components of a deck requires a detailed model. The analyses of scaffoldings with load by materials have to be performed with using more simple models of platforms. The static-strength analysis of full scaffoldings with many frame elements can be performed if the simplest models of decks are used. In this paper the sets of truss elements replace the stiffness of scaffolding decks.
