Biotechnology as one of the 21st century's world central technologies has become a key development area which is applied in various fields such as food, agriculture, medicine, environment, mining and energy. Along with the national wave to contribute to this critical field of science and technology, the school of chemical engineering (IUST) established its Biotechnology Research Laboratory in year 2001. Educational and research activities of academic staffs and biotechnology students (and other researchers working in relevant subjects) are carried out in this laboratory. Till now, about 30 M.Sc. projects on: metabolic engineering, modeling of microbial growth and product formation, isolation and screening, microbial production of antibiotic, biosurfactant, enzyme and amino acid at submerged and solid state fermentation as well as wastewater treatment and bioremediation of contaminated soil have been completed under supervision of 2 academic staff and at present, 10 MSc and 1 PhD students are working on their projects.
This laboratory is equipped with autoclave, sterile cabinet, incubator, microscope, fermenter, centrifuge and micro-centrifuge, spectrophotometer, ultrasonic homogenizer, tensiometer, photometer, colony counter and high performance liquid chromatography.
