| School of Computer Engineering
The school of Computer Engineering inaugurated its independence from the school of Electrical Engineering in 1986, starting with two undergraduate programs in Computer Engineering, namely Software Engineering and Hardware Engineering. Based on the school 's strategic plan, postgraduate programs at the M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels were introduced later on over four years. Currently, about 700 students study at different levels each year, and this rate will grow five percent annually according to plan. Particular emphasis is on postgraduate program growth both in variety of disciplines and the number of students. Applicants at all levels are selected through a country-wide university entrance examination that is organized annually by the Iran Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. The exam is quite competitive country-wide and only high ranking applicants get the opportunity to study in this school . Computer Engineering is one of the most wanted and competitive disciplines in the country, in general and at the IUST, in particular. Apart from higher education, the school is also fully engaged in state- of- the- art research in major fields of Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Architecture. Currently 15 research laboratories in the school support the research, some of which are sponsored by research institutes outside the IUST.
