Abstract

The application of fuzzy algorithms in the response control of a base isolated building with MR dampers is investigated in this

paper. Most of the previous researches in this field have been focused on fuzzy algorithms with linear membership function

however in the current study the membership functions are assumed to be Gaussian and their effectiveness is studied. For this

purpose, an eight-story building with regularity in plan and height is considered. The adopted base isolation system includes

linear bearings and control devices for improving the behavior of isolated structure under near field ground motions. MR

dampers are used to reduce base displacements and have the capacity of 1000 kN with the maximum applied voltage of 10 V. In

order to verify the control procedure and analyzing the structure, a simulation procedure is developed. This procedure performs

linear analysis of the structure in presence or in absence of the base isolation system. Moreover, the simulation procedure is able

to appropriately determine the MR damper voltage using fuzzy logic algorithms and then analyzing the whole system too. Finally,

seven near-field earthquake records are chosen in order to study the structure responses under these records and the obtained

results demonstrate the accuracy of proposed control procedure

Abstract

This paper proposes a new hybrid method namely SA-IP including simulated annealing and interior point algorithms to find the optimal toll prices based on level of service (LOS) in order to maximize the mobility in urban network. By considering six fuzzy LOS for flows, the tolls of congested links can be derived by a bi-level fuzzy programming problem. The objective function of the upper level problem is to minimize the difference between current LOS and desired LOS of links. In this level, to find optimal toll, a simulated annealing algorithm is used. The lower level problem is a fuzzy flow estimator model with fuzzy link costs. Applying a famous defuzzification function, a real-valued multi-commodity flow problem can be obtained. Then a polynomial time interior point algorithm is proposed to find the optimal solution regarding to the estimated flows. In pricing process, by imposing cost on some links with LOS F or E, users incline to use other links with better LOS and less cost. During the iteration of SA algorithm, the LOS of a lot of links gradually closes to their desired values and so the algorithm decreases the number of links with LOS worse than desirable LOS. Sioux Falls network is considered to illustrate the performance of SA-IP method on congestion pricing based on different LOS. In this pilot, after toll pricing, the number of links with LOS D, E and F are reduced and LOS of a great number of links becomes C. Also the value of objective function improves 65.97% after toll pricing process. It is shown optimal toll for considerable network is 5 dollar and by imposing higher toll, objective function will be worse.

Abstract

Driven Precast Reinforced Concrete Piles (DPRCP) is extensively used as a foundation for bridges constructed over canals in Egypt in order to avoid the diversion of water canals. The objectives of this research include identifying the main activities of DPRCP execution in the bridge-construction industry in Egypt and the risk factors affecting them. In addition, assessment of the effects of these risk factors on the quality of activities of DPRCP. Four activities are identified in order to execute the process of construction of DPRCP. These activities include: preparing and casting piles, positioning piles and steering the driving machine, handling piles, and driving piles. Thirty one risk factors affecting the DPRCP activities execution are identified. A survey was executed in Egypt concerning probabilities of occurrence of these factors and their impacts on the quality of activities of DPRCP. In addition, a new membership function is introduced to represent the quality of activities and used in a fuzzy model for factors assessment. Results showed that the proposed membership function can be used effectively to assess the quality of activities associated with the construction of DPRCP. A list of risk factors is highlighted to show the most critical risk factors that help in preparing the quality management plan for the upcoming similar projects. The gentile distribution of data obtained for the different activities proved that the investigated risk factors for the DPRCP in this study are significant.

Abstract

The study presents a model for the evaluation of construction projects from the point of view of the investor. The problem lies in choosing the best solution from the point of view of many criteria. The proposed model is based on a multi-criteria comparative analysis using fuzzy logic. The first part of the paper presents a selection of criteria describing the construction project along with their description. The set of attributes describing the analyzed object was determined on the basis of the synthesis of specific proposals for the parameters of construction projects. The set of criteria has been divided into two groups: technical, technological and organizational criteria and separately the economic criteria. Then, the number of variables describing the observations was checked using principal component analysis (PCA). Course of action was presented in the event of multiple criteria analysis using the fuzzy set theory. Both the weights and the evaluations of individual criteria were modelled using membership functions due to the fact that when describing a construction project, or the validity of the criteria of describing variables, they are approximate. An analysis of the correlation of selected project criteria was presented. The proposed decision support model of assessing a construction project makes possible to compare various variants based on 11 factors identified. The use of fuzzy logic has enabled more accurate description of the phenomenon analysed when the exact parameters of the project in the planning and preparation stage of the project are not known.
