2001-2002 RCDE, Kyoto University and Lund University, to incorporate the granular material based model of sediment transport to the N-line model for shoreline predication, and further calibration and verification of model with the field measured data at Ogata Wave Observatory.

4.5 Research Accomplishments

MBS-2D (I) A numerical model (attached with a short manual for code) simulates the hyper-concentrated multiphase flow transport in river and coastal .

The model is constructed on the basis of Euler-Lagrange coupling of the fluid phase and solid phase, respectively. In which, the fluid phase is computed by the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation in conjunction with the k- e turbulence model for turbulence closure, while the sediment motion is numerically simulated as a granular media with the aid of the Distinct Element Method (DEM) . To simulate the sediment transport under breaking wave in surf and swash zone, the model is using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) technique in addition to the open boundary treatment for tracking the location of flow’s free surface. The wave motion is approximated by solitary wave theory, which breaks in surf zone and then propagates into swash zone. Also, the hydrodynamics of flow in swash zone, namely infiltration, exfiltration of underground water and/or induced pore pressure during wave runup and rundown on a beach, can be easily approximated.

EE-2D (II) A numerical model (attached with a short manual for code) simulates the hyper-concentrated multiphase flow transport in river and coastal .

The model is constructed on the basis of Euler- Euler coupling of the governing equations of fluid and solid phases, respectively. Both of the fluid and sediment phases were described via the Navier-Stokes equations, i.e. the model was implemented using time-averaged continuity and momentum equations for the fluid and sediment phases and a modified turbulence closure for the fluid phase. The fluid and sediment phases were then coupled with introducing the interaction forces between phases. To simulate the sediment transport under breaking wave in surf and swash zone, the model is using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) technique in addition to the open boundary treatment for tracking the location of flow’s free surface.
