**The School of Mathematics**

**History **

The Department of Mathematics at Iran University of Science and Technology is one of the founding and actively involved groups in the establishment of IUST’s School of Science. With the university’s growth and development, the Department of Mathematics established its Mathematics major in 1984 specializing in the fields of Pure and Applied Mathematics. This department officially began its Mathematics Master’s program in 1988 with the admission of 11 students in Pure Mathematics, and in 1989 with the admission of 6 students in Applied Mathematics.

1988 marks the initial upgrade process of IUST’s Department of Mathematics into the School of Mathematics. Finally in 1993, and in line with university guidelines, the Department of Mathematics was promoted into the School of Mathematics, around the same time it enrolled 9 PhD candidates in the fields of Applied and Pure Mathematics. In 1999, at the same time the country’s schools of mathematics were expanding, the School of Mathematics at IUST succeeded in running one of its long term expansion programs, and established the Department of Statistics and the Department of Computer Science in 2004. These departments began with the enrollment of 12 Master’s students in 2005.

The old building of the School of Mathematics was demolished in 2006, and the school of was therefore temporarily run in the Applied Physics building located north east of IUST. After completion of the building project, the School of Mathematics, and integrated general education classes were relocated to the new building in 2009. The fourth and fifth floors, and the entire eastern wing of the new building belong to the School of Mathematics. The fourth floor has six classrooms that have capacity for twenty students, and are for graduate students only. The school has yet to build an auditorium for conferences and graduate thesis defenses.

The school currently holds 15 faculty, two in the field of Algebra, three in Analysis, two in Geometry, 1 in Operation Research, two in Statistics, and five faculty in Numerical Analysis. The faculty is composed of state of the art professors (2), associate-professors (8), and assistant professors (5). In the area of instruction, roughly 20 credit degrees are taught by visiting colleagues with a Doctorate degree.

Currently the school offers three academic degrees in various fields, Bachelor’s (Pure and Applied), Master’s and PhD (Applied, Pure, and Mathematical Statistics).

During the school year 2010-2011 the School of Mathematics had 325 students, 160 Bachelor’s, 111 Master’s, and 54 PhD students.

Since 1988-2009 the school has graduated nearly 600 Master’s students, and since 1994 the school has had 106 PhD students, 52 of which have graduated and are currently employed in public universities.

The School of Mathematics library has the following facilities: study hall, computer site, and a reservoir. This library currently has a rough 1817 books in Farsi and 3567 books in Latin, which can be helpful assets for students along side the university’s central library. The school also has two undergraduate and graduate computer labs with more than forty computers.

The school has provided PhD students with 9 internet and printer equipped study rooms.

In 2009, the school was authorized by the Director of Cultural Affairs to publish

the Journal of Mathematical Sciences, which is supervised by Dr. Mahdi Najafi Khah and directed by Dr. Ali Mahdi Pour Shirayeh.

The mathematics lab was established in the year 2000, and is currently run in the new building.
